🧪Your Podcast Potion | The Week of January 6
Be Yourself, Listen Deep, Defeat Anxiety, Pay Attention, Say Hello, Women Are Bitchy, and Can Plants Learn
Well, here we are. Hello dear friends.
My heart is heavy this week for my fellow humans in LA. My sweet friend, Julia, with 3 kids and another on the way, didn’t have to grab anything before the fire enveloped their home and took their entire community, her little slice of heaven on earth. She and her husband posted an update today. Truthfully, I feel like the secret to life is learning to deal and work with our constant state of low-grade trauma and grief. It’s just always there in the background making life full of texture and color. And also there in the crumbled mess are sparkling treasures, beautiful adventures, if we choose to dig around and notice them.
Here’s to a week of tending to our little world with care and compassion.
I hope this week’s Podcast Potion proves to be a sweet companion for you as you go about your days and fills your ears with happiness and wisdom.
Here’s the top 7 from this week…

“Self compassion can help people feel more authentic. So self compassion is having kindness toward yourself, it’s also about recognizing that we’re all human and part of being human is being imperfect and making mistakes. And having the ability to reflect on those mistakes with sort of compusure and awareness with acceptance, what they found is that self compassion, people with higher trait self compassion experience greater trait authenticity.”
-Erica Bailey
Tuesday
The Gently Used Human with Dr. Scott Lyons | The Art of Deep Listening with Ann Weiser Cornell | Oct 23 2024 | 1 hr
“Life isn’t meant to be stuck. We’re not meant to be going over and over the same ideas, the same addictions, the same problems, falling into the same kind of stuck relationships. That’s not what life is for. It’s meant for new possibilities, for growth, for next steps to come. But the place where the next steps come from is at first very vague and unclear and somewhere in the body I’m feeling something…”
-Ann Weiser Cornell

-Martha Beck

“Creativity is making connections, useful connections, between things that initially don’t seem to be related. So you’re practicing creativity, you’re practicing curiosity, you’re practicing attention every time you do this. And when this becomes part of your routine, you get better and better and better at these essential parts of being alive, of being a human being, able to experience the wonder of the world around us.”

Plain English with Derek Thompson | ‘The Anti-Social Century’: America’s Epidemic of Solitude- and How To Fix It | Jan 10 2025 | 1 hr 10 min
“The choice to reach out and approach somebody or to avoid somebody. And these can be little things. You’re walking down the sidewalk. I can walk down the sidewalk in one of two ways. I can say hi and smile at the people coming by or I can keep to myself and look to the ground. There’s no skin off my back if I do one or the other. It’s easier to keep to yourself, but the block will better if you smile and say hello to people.”
-Nick Epley
Saturday
Radiolab | Smarty Plants | Jan 10 2025 | 38 min
In regards to plants being able to learn and store new information,
“The fact that humans do it in a particular way, it doesn't mean that everyone needs to do it that way to be able to do it in the first place. There are multiple ways of doing one thing.”
-Monica Gagliano, evolutionary ecologist
Sunday
The Rachel Hollis Podcast | 42 Truths I Know at 42 (but wish I knew at 22) | Jan 8 2025 | 49 min
“Real women aren’t perfect women and perfect women aren’t real women. We are flawed, we are beautiful, and scarred and messy and boring and bitter and bitchy and a whole amalgamation of stuff that the world doesn’t always like to see. But that’s real. And the more we can show up as our authentic selves, the more enjoyment we’re going to get out of this one life we’ve got to live. And the more space we’re going to make for other people to live authentically and truthfully as themselves.”
-Rachel Hollis
