I was raised by a "bad" mother like you in the 1970s with lots of freedom and independence. And somehow I turned out just fine.

I had the most wonderful mom a curious boy could ever have. She was an artist at heart and she really didn't care much what the neighbors thought. I spent endless hours with my dog and friends playing in the forest and wading in the pond with polliwogs wriggling between my toes. Also riding our bikes to Edmonds beach 3 miles away as thirteen year olds We also spent days fishing off the pier by ourselves.

I suppose those days are gone for most kids. And I am forever grateful that my mom allowed be to be an explorer and that she made me feel like I belonged 🙏

I don't think they're gone quite yet! My kids are still building firts, running a lemonade stand, biking around town by themselves, climbing trees, and reading in the ponds and rivers around here! I hope a childhood like this makes a comeback!
