🧪Podcast Potion | Screens, women's work, even bad attention is good, becoming defiant, the domestication of Jesus, follow your curiosity, parenting through LA wildfires
Week of January 13th
Hi friends! Did you have a good weekend? I hope it was better than you expected! It was chilly here, but not polar vortex cold, which I’m grateful for. Still, I pulled out the ol’ hand warmers- my little secret to staying happy when the weather wants to freeze my extremities off.
As always, I always enjoy mixing up these potions for you! Podcasts and audiobooks keep me company on my runs, while I’m folding laundry or prepping dinner. It’s amazing to be able to learn alongside my normal, everyday routines. They activate my mind in the best way possible, quieting negativity or spiraling thoughts.
There’s quite a variety to pick from in this week’s potion and I’m sure you’ll find something to intrigue, uplift, entertain, or inspire you!
Enjoy!
Monday// Is Technology an Improvement?
The Gray Area with Sean Illing | The Screens Between Us | Jan 13 2025 | 49 min
“We all do rely on these tools. They have opened up amazing possibilities in terms of what we can do. So I think that we have to be just more thoughtful about what we’re giving up when we embrace the technology…
Most of our culture, most of our discussion around technology is oriented around the new is better and the new will allow you to deny the realities of your own physical limits and the world’s physical limits and that’s not true.”
-Christine Rosen
Tuesday// Stay at Home Mom vs. Working Mom
Under the Influence with Jo Piazza | A Revolution for Women’s Work and Ambition with Nehu Ruch | 47 min
“When you ask ‘what do you do?’ you don’t say ‘Right now I’m a stay at home mom’ or ‘Right now I’m a working mom,’ you talk about, ‘Right now I’m focusing on this, right now I get to be with my kids, we’ll see what comes next…’ You get to talk about right now and you get to hold space for how this is an evolving journey. If we can abandon the polar opposites and embrace that we are all in between and ever evolving and ever-shifting, that’s really interesting…”
Wednesday// How Can You Act Defiantly?
Daily Creative with Todd Henry | Defy | Jan 14 2025 | 17 min
“We get conditioned, we get wired to comply and we start equating compliance with being good and defiance with being bad. And what my research and experience has taught is that sometimes it seems to be bad to be good, it is sometimes bad to be so compliant because we sacrifce so much.”
Thursday// On The Domestication of Jesus
Makers & Mystics | Etiquette of The Wild with Martin Shaw | Jan 16 2025 | 56 min
“In my life as a storyteller, a mythographer, and as a Christian, I’m always living in the tension of tradition and innovation. Always.”
-Martin Shaw
Friday// The President Needs To Perform
The Ezra Klein Show | Attention is Power | Jan 17 2025 | 1 hr 13 min
“What Trump figured out is that in the attention age, in this sort of war of all against all, that actually just getting attention matters more than whatever comes after it. And one way reliably to get people’s attention is negative attention.”
-Chris Hayes
Saturday// Follow Your Curiosity
Amina Change Your Life | How Directional Living is the Antidote Underfulfilled Overachievers Need with Megan Hellerer | Sept 24 2024 | 45 min
“It’s not something you can figure out with our brain. Instead we want to follow our curiosity. Curiosity, to me, is the best proxy we have for our purpose. I’m not saying there’s only one way to do this but for many people that question (what isSmy purpose?) doesn’t help and can often lead us to the trap where we think we’re finished or it’s finite as opposed to evolving.”
-Megan Hellerer
Sunday// Kids and Wildfires
Good Inside with Dr. Becky | Parenting During the LA Wildfires | Jan 18 2025 | 46 min
“Nobody expected overnight to evacuate their home, for their community to look like scorched earth, to have their home and everything in it gone, to not know if you can go back…no one expected that and actually saying words to yourself like ‘I didn’t expect this to happen’ or ‘I really didn’t want this to happen.’ Sometimes more than the validation of our feelings, it’s the validation of the violation of our expectations that our body really, really needs to hear from us.”

PS: I’ll be back tomorrow, Monday, with another favorite audio rec!
PPS: Here is one other podcast I loved this week. It’s actually my second time listening to it!
An interview with Katherine Center on Totally Booked (I will read/listen to EVERYTHING she writes!) I loved the part about her husband Gordon!
