Being with you, my shoulders drop,
Tension melts, and I see the brightness in me mirrored back.
Nestled against your neck, the smell of forest and sea,
I curl up into your embrace, the most luxurious cotton sheets
Couldn’t offer the kind of rest I find
While pressed up to next to your strength.
—
Whenever I’m with you, I imagine I’m sinking
Into a bubbling hot spring beneath a starlit sky,
The world is friendlier when I’m lost inside of us,
Life becomes a warm invitation, not a threat, suddenly
Everything will work out.
—
How is it that a simple hey, how are you, scatters
Every anxious thought I carred in my clinched jaw,
Your soft gaze, casts a spell, calls me home
To my harmonious wholeness.
Grounded in your attentive love,
I unfurl from the inside, out.
I can be all of me, there’s room enough
to hold my disparate parts.
—
Your tender kisses up and down my neck, open me
To the irresistible wonder of this tiny moment.
I vow to give myself wholly to the path of least resistance,
To stay awake to the feelings and the flow, the electricity
Of being alive and surrendered to the mystery.
—
This is as good as it gets, the song droned on.
But I harbored a secret suspicion for too many years,
Perhaps love didn’t have to be mostly mundane work and mere survival.
Your sexy smile, a messenger of possibility resonating
With the truth I always knew,
You would be the easiest decision I've ever made,
The full body, yes, I always craved.
Have you experienced this kind of romantic relationship? What line of this poem speaks to you?
PS: Currently, I’m reading Hold Me Tight by Sue Johnson. She is the primary developer of Emotional Focused Couples Therapy and a leading innovator of adult attachment. I wish I had this book sooner!
